In a concerning event that took place Wednesday morning, a fire in Hixson left one person injured and transported to the hospital. The Chattanooga Fire Department’s Blue Shift received the call and sprang into action at approximately 11:46 a.m., responding to a residence located in the 2400 block of Sunset Strip Street.
When firefighters arrived at the home, they quickly noticed slight smoke coming from the property. However, as they made their way inside, they discovered that the entire interior was filled with smoke, a sign that the situation required urgent attention. The flames were found to be originating from a dresser in the bedroom, which was on fire.
Thanks to the quick response of the fire department, the firefighters were able to extinguish the flames swiftly, preventing any further damage to the home and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, one person sustained injuries during this incident. The victim was reported to have suffered from smoke inhalation along with some burns to the face. Emergency medical services were on hand and promptly transported the individual to the hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the fire revealed some concerning information regarding the cause. It was reported that the victim had been smoking while using an oxygen machine. This combination turned out to be quite dangerous. The initial spark from smoking ignited the oxygen machine along with the nearby dresser, creating a risky situation that could have been avoided.
In light of this incident, the Chattanooga Fire Department is reminding the public about the risks involved with smoking around home oxygen. The fire department stressed that there is no safe way to smoke when using oxygen at home. Medical oxygen can become explosive if even the tiniest flame or spark is present. Even when the oxygen is turned off, the fire risk remains, as the increased levels of oxygen in the air, along with nearby furniture, clothing, and even hair, can lead to fires starting or spreading more easily.
This incident serves as a reminder for everyone to be vigilant and aware of fire safety, particularly for those who may be using oxygen at home. Regular safety checks, keeping combustible materials away from potential ignition sources, and smart decision-making can help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As Hixson residents learn about this incident, it’s important that we come together to support one another and ensure that everyone is safe in their homes. Keeping communication open about fire safety, particularly in households where oxygen is used, is crucial in maintaining a safe environment for all.
Let’s all take a moment to reflect on our personal safety practices and ensure that we are doing what we can to protect ourselves and our loved ones from potential dangers in the home.
Stay safe, Hixson!
