Ailey dedicated 40 years to teaching music at Hixson Middle School and inspired countless students. His musical talents extended to local churches and chorales, adding vibrancy to the community. Ailey’s life celebration and contributions will be remembered by family, friends, and the many lives he influenced through his passion for music. The community unites to honor his legacy during a memorial service set for February 8, 2025.
Hixson, Tennessee, is united in grief as it mourns the passing of an extraordinary educator and cherished member of the community, David Brian Ailey. At 62 years old, Ailey left this world on January 26, 2025, in his hometown of Chattanooga, where he had lived his entire life. His dedication to music and passion for teaching left a lasting impact that will be remembered for years to come.
David Ailey began his musical journey in Chattanooga and nurtured it every step of the way. He graduated from Brainerd High School and pursued further education at Carson Newman College, developing skills that would enable him to shape the lives of young musicians. For an impressive 40 years, Ailey dedicated his life to teaching music, primarily at Hixson Middle School. His students, past and present, often described him as being “like a father”, a testament to the care and guidance he provided.
Ailey was not just a teacher; he was a talented vocalist and pianist who frequently showcased his gifts at Brainerd United Methodist Church. His musical talents extended beyond teaching and worship, as he was actively involved with the Scenic City Chorale and the Chattanooga Symphony Opera. His passion for composing shone brightly in his recent performances, including a piece he shared during a Christmas program that left his audience moved and inspired.
In his personal life, Ailey was surrounded by family, though he faced the loss of his father, Michael Lewis Ailey, and stepfather, Donald S. Eldridge. He is survived by his loving mother, Gladys E. Eldridge, and his two sisters, Deborah Nite and Theresa Cato. The family also remembers him fondly through his nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews, who carry his spirit forward.
To honor David Ailey’s remarkable life and contributions to the community, a Celebration of Life service is set to take place on February 8, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Brainerd United Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 1 p.m. until the service begins. Following the celebration, Ailey will be interred at the church’s cemetery, where friends and family will have a chance to say their final goodbyes.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Brainerd United Methodist Church, a significant part of Ailey’s life and community. The arrangements are being lovingly handled by Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel, ensuring that Ailey’s wishes are fulfilled.
David Brian Ailey’s life was one filled with melody and mentorship. His contributions to music and the many lives he touched will resonate for years to come. As Hixson grieves the loss of this remarkable man, it also celebrates the legacy of love and inspiration he leaves behind. Ailey’s spirit, like the music he cherished, will continue to play on in the hearts of his students and the community.
