Chattanooga is home to a remarkable story of resilience and determination centered around women’s basketball grad student Kaliya Ford. This Arkansas native has faced numerous challenges throughout her career, leading her to reflect on her journey this holiday season.
Kalifa Ford, a basketball standout from Bono, Arkansas, has had an eventful college career. A graduate student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Ford’s remarkable journey has included triumphs and struggles, especially in the past few years associated with her personal life and career.
After showcasing her talent at Brookland High School, where she was a three-time Arkansas All-State player, Ford committed to Oklahoma Baptist University in 2019. Her collegiate career took a challenging turn when, just ten games into her freshman season, she suffered a serious knee injury, tearing her meniscus and partially tearing her ACL.
Ford’s commitment and determination paid off as she returned to the court. By her junior year, she led her team in scoring and rebounding, earning First Team All-Great American Conference honors. After reaching out to Coach Deandra Schirmer, Ford transitioned to Valdosta State University, where she continued to flourish, leading her team to a stellar season.
The year 2023 introduced significant challenges, especially with becoming a mother. Ford gave birth to her daughter, Elleauna, which brought new meaning to her aspirations and goals. During this time, she struggled with the strains of motherhood along with the pressures of being an athlete in a rigorous environment.
This challenge took a toll, as Ford initially kept her pregnancy a secret. After opening up to Coach Schirmer, she received support and encouragement that helped her manage both motherhood and her athletic career. Ford’s resilience surfaced as she returned to the basketball court just months after giving birth.
Having recently transferred to Chattanooga for the upcoming season, Ford is repositioning herself in Division I basketball. She was initially celebrated, being named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference Team. However, just days before the season opener, Ford unfortunately faced another setback with a season-ending ACL tear.
Despite the injury, Ford remains focused on her recovery and future goals. Coach Schirmer emphasizes that Ford’s journey is far from over, noting her tenacity and positive spirit as key elements that will aid her in overcoming this new obstacle.
Kalifa Ford’s story is not just about basketball; it reflects the broader themes of perseverance, family, and growth. This holiday season, as she reflects on her past challenges and successes, it is clear that her journey is a beacon of hope for many, especially for athletes facing similar struggles.
Ford continues to work hard, not only as a player but also as a mother and teammate. Her ability to remain positive in the face of adversity and her dedication to her craft ensures that she will emerge stronger than ever.
As the new season approaches, Ford’s journey exemplifies the spirit of resilience and commitment. Her determination to return to the court, alongside her responsibilities as a mother, inspires those around her and reflects the strength of women in sports.
In a world where challenges are inevitable, Ford is prepared to face them head-on, one day at a time, with optimism and heart.
