Katherine G. Maycann, a revered figure in the Chattanooga community, has passed away at the ripe age of 94. Known to her close ones as “Kitty” or “YaYa,” Katherine died in her home on February 27, 2024.
Originally from Birchwood, Tennessee, Katherine moved to Chattanooga as a teenager, where she continued to reside for the rest of her life. Katherine spent the majority of her professional years as a secretary for the Hamilton County Public School system. Katherine’s welcoming and amiable nature made her a beloved figure among students, many of whom would continue to greet her warmly in public long after graduating from school.
Apart from her professional commitment, Katherine was known for her exceptional skills as a quilter. She loved making quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, cherishing the personal touch that homemade quilts brought to these gifts. Katherine’s love for people extended beyond her family, often bringing strangers to family gatherings and her dinner table.
Katherine was predeceased by her husband, John Anthony Maycann Jr., and her siblings. She is survived by her five children, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Katherine also leaves behind her beloved cat, Abby, and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends who will continue to remember her fondly.
A Celebration of Katherine’s Life is scheduled to take place in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 1, from 5-8 p.m. for visitation. Following the visitation, a Rosary Service will be held at 8 p.m. Katherine will then be laid to rest alongside her husband, John, in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Respecting Katherine’s love for animals, the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to local Humane Society or Pet Rescue Services as a tribute to her lifelong commitment to caring for pets.
