World’s Longest Yard Sale Is Underway
Six States, 690 Miles, Countless Treasures
Chattanooga, TN – August 1, 2024
The World’s Longest Yard Sale has kicked off along Highway 127, transforming the scenic route into a bustling marketplace stretching an incredible 690 miles across six states: Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. Initiated today, the event will continue through Sunday, drawing hundreds of thousands of treasure hunters and eager shoppers.
First organized back in 1987, this annual event has become a summer tradition, inviting people to explore rural communities and scenic byways. Spearheaded by officials like the then Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau Chief Bob Elmore, the goal was to encourage travelers to forgo the interstate in favor of the more picturesque Highway 127.
This unique cultural experience offers more than just yard sales. Visitors can enjoy local attractions and relish the charm of small-town America. A particularly popular stretch includes Highway 127 over Signal Mountain, through Dunlap, and onward to Pikeville.
A Mix of Old and New
One of the standout participants, John Suggs, has been involved since the very beginning, testifying to the event’s legacy and enduring appeal. With each passing year, the sale grows, drawing crowds eager to find that one-of-a-kind item or simply enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Safety First
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is advising all participants and visitors to exercise extreme caution while navigating the sale. With the high volume of pedestrians and vehicles, safety is a top priority.
Whether you’re a seasoned yard sale veteran or a curious first-timer, the World’s Longest Yard Sale offers something for everyone. So, why not take a detour off the beaten path and explore what these unique communities have to offer? Happy hunting!
