Mary Christine Belue Ricketts: A Tribute to a Cherished Custodian and Recording Artist
Chattanooga has lost another gem as Mary Christine Belue Ricketts, popularly known by the affectionate moniker “Ms. Mary”, passed away on June 21, 2024, at her residence after a prolonged illness. Born on April 10, 1946, in Camden County, South Carolina, Mary spent the vast majority of her life in Chattanooga.
A Life Of Service And Dedication
Ricketts, a lifelong Baptist who later in life joined the Lookout Mountain Methodist Church, devoted herself to the service of others. She was an active participant and contributor to her church’s annual Labor Day BBQ’s. Her contributions extended to various charity benefits, showcasing her cooking and singing skills.
Mary started her professional journey as a custodian for the City Of Chattanooga/Hamilton County in 1973 at Brainerd Junior High School. Displaying her perseverance and merit, she climbed up to the role of head custodian soon after. She spent the twilight years of her career at Brainerd High School until her retirement in late 2021.
Mary, despite never having any children, claimed to have thousands as she lovingly bestowed her affection on all the students at her longtime alma mater.
A Musical Gift
Mary’s affinity for music and her angelic voice led her to carve a niche for herself as a recording artist. She gravitated towards gospel and Western Swing genres, and her talent led her to Nashville where she landed her first recording contract.
In April 1982, Mary recorded her first songs, “Slow Country Dancin” and “Cry, Cry Baby”, at the Charlie Daniels Band Studios. Her performances at the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium, alongside stalwarts like Marty Stewart, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, received both local and national recognition.
After her manager’s sudden demise, she retreated from active recording but continued to bestow her performances at charity events across the Southeast.
Remembering A Life Well-Lived
Mary is survived by her nieces, Brenda Ellen Wallin and Christy Gidden, nephew, Jeremy Watkins, great-nieces, Stephanie Hixson and Heather (Lance) Bennett, and great-nephew, Zach Watkins.
A testament to her life of dedication and service, a memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 30, at 3 p.m. at the Brainerd High School Auditorium.
In honor of Ms. Mary, the community, staff, and students of Brainerd High School, and every life she touched, will remember her effervescent spirit, kindness, and positivity that made her a beloved figure.
With heavy hearts, the city of Chattanooga bids farewell to a remarkable woman whose life and accomplishments demonstrate love, service, and relentless dedication to her community. Despite the profound sense of loss, Mary Christine Belue Ricketts’ legacy will continue to inspire the countless lives she has touched.
