Chattanooga, get ready for a new nightlife experience! A vibrant new nightclub called Mint is set to open its doors at 1208 King St., Unit 120. This exciting venture is spearheaded by Brian Joyce, who previously co-owned the Blue Light bar located on Station Street. Although the Blue Light had a short-lived stint, Joyce is eager to turn the page and launch this fresh establishment with a plan in mind.
If you remember, the Blue Light opened its doors in late August 2021 but faced numerous challenges leading to the suspension and eventual revocation of its beer license due to various violations. From fights breaking out on the premises to failing to report incidents to the police, the bar struggled to maintain its operation. Despite Joyce’s repeated appeals, a security plan was never put in place to satisfy city regulations.
However, with the Blue Light officially closing at the end of August 2023, it appears that Joyce has had a moment to regroup. He decided to let the beer license expire, as didn’t want the past to linger over his new plans for Mint.
Last Thursday, during a Chattanooga Beer Board meeting, Joyce received a green light for a new beer permit for Mint. The board members discussed how he would differentiate his new club from the past, citing that he is now the sole owner and that the focus will be on a distinct vibe. “I planned this out with that in mind,” Joyce said. He has envisioned a fresh atmosphere with a new menu and added entertainment options available, all while aiming to attract a different crowd, steering clear of the issues that plagued the previous establishment.
The location might be just three blocks from where the Blue Light once stood, but Joyce assures everyone he’s taking a different approach. The new venue features a full kitchen, which means guests can expect a variety of food choices that were not available at the former location. The plans also include live bands, DJs, and a lively dance atmosphere, so it sounds like a fun spot for Chattanooga’s nightlife!
However, despite the positive vibes surrounding the impending launch, it’s worth noting that some concerns remain, especially regarding security. Surprisingly, none of the beer board members addressed crucial questions about plans to ensure safety and prevent overserving at Mint. Calendra Smith, an advisor with the Hamilton County Coalition, pointed out the significance of understanding the business owner’s strategies for safety before approving the license, especially given the Blue Light’s tumultuous history.
Joyce has expressed confidence in the relationship with his new landlord, Jimmy White, president of Urban Story Ventures. He believes this partnership will make Mint thrive. “The communication and expectations are in sync this time around,” said Joyce, highlighting the differences he faces now compared to his prior experiences.
The layout of the venue also offers space for late-night entertainment. On Tuesday to Thursday, Mint will close at midnight, while it will stay open until 2:30 a.m. on weekends. With an impressive 6,000 square feet of space, it promises to be a buzzing hub for night owls.
As Chattanooga gears up for the arrival of Mint, residents are filled with curiosity and excitement for what this new nightclub will bring to the local nightlife scene. Here’s hoping Joyce’s commitment to learning from the past will lead to a safer, more enjoyable experience for all!
