CHATTANOOGA, TN – Kids in Chattanooga are about to have a whole lot more fun thanks to a new outdoors program launched to benefit local youth and families. The Tennessee State Parks Conservancy and Outdoor Chattanooga recently introduced an exciting and inclusive initiative that’s set to run year-round.
Experiencing Nature for the First Time
The program is being referred to as “Kids in Parks” and is aimed at helping Southeast Tennessee youth and their families enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits of being outside. This initiative is specifically designed to cater to children and families from various socioeconomic backgrounds, focusing on breaking down barriers that might prevent engagement with nature, especially in low-income communities.
“Outdoor activities are typically a very accessible means of finding health and happiness, yet some barriers still exist, particularly in low-income communities,” said Alex Wyss, the executive director of Tennessee State Parks Conservancy. “This program aims to bridge that gap and provide a welcoming environment for everyone in the community.”
Adventure Awaits at Local Parks
Kids and their families will be given the chance to take trips to beautiful and educational locations such as Harrison Bay, Booker T. Washington, and Red Clay state parks. They will engage in hands-on activities like snorkeling and hiking under the guidance of nature experts. These activities are designed to make participants more comfortable in outdoor environments and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature.
Looking Ahead
The Kids in Parks program has already secured enough funding to operate for at least the next two years, showing a promising future. Currently, the program is limited to a select number of schools and students, but there are hopes to expand throughout the state in the coming years. As it stands, this initiative marks a significant step towards making the wonders of the outdoors accessible to all kids in the Chattanooga area.
Stay tuned for more updates and information on how you can get involved or benefit from the program. Chattanooga’s youth are in for an adventure!
