Outdoors Program Launched to Benefit Local Area Youth

Chattanooga, TN – The Tennessee State Parks Conservancy and Outdoor Chattanooga have banded together to unveil an exciting, year-round program aimed at local area youth and families. The initiative, known as Kids in Parks, is designed to provide profound physical and mental health benefits by encouraging outdoor activities. Launched on August 7, 2024, this program promises to open up new adventures for the community.

What’s the Excitement About?

The Kids in Parks program aims to introduce Southeast Tennessee youth and their families to the invigorating world of nature. By exploring local state parks such as Harrison Bay, Booker T. Washington, and Red Clay, participants will get hands-on experience and learn about the natural world from experts. Activities like snorkeling and hiking will help youngsters feel more comfortable in outdoor settings, promoting both physical activity and mental well-being.

Bridging the Gap

Outdoor activities are typically a very accessible means of finding health and happiness, yet some barriers still exist, particularly in low-income communities,” said the executive director of Tennessee State Parks Conservancy. This program aims to bridge that gap and provide a welcoming environment for everyone in the community.

Reach and Future Plans

The Kids in Parks program has secured enough funding to run for at least two years. While it is currently limited to a select number of schools and students, there are high hopes to expand the program throughout the state. Organizers are optimistic that increased participation in outdoor activities will foster a lifelong appreciation for nature and healthier lifestyles among young people.
