Chattanooga has been blessed with many remarkable individuals, but few have impacted our community like Pete Cooper. A giant among the movers and shakers of our city, Pete’s contributions to Chattanooga were not just noteworthy; they were transformational. When I had the honor of meeting Pete during our time in the third class of Leadership Chattanooga, I quickly discovered the passion and dedication that defined his life’s work.
Known as a great banker, it was his role as the president of the Community Foundation that truly set him apart. Under Pete’s leadership, the Community Foundation blossomed into what many residents and organizations believe is the greatest organization in Chattanooga. It wasn’t just about funding; Pete had a unique talent for bringing people together. He believed that by inviting representatives from all walks of life to the table, every organization could become more equipped to achieve its individual mission.
For Pete, community was everything. He recognized that Chattanooga’s strength lies in its diversity. His passion for uniting the community was unmistakable and incredibly effective. Many will remember the Together We Can scholarship program that he helped create, which assisted thousands of our youth in not just attending but graduating from college. What an incredible legacy this has left!
Beyond his impressive accolades, what many admired in Pete was his ability to listen. He had a natural gift for understanding the needs of those who often didn’t have a voice at the table. He made it a point to engage with those individuals, ensuring that their opinions and experiences mattered. To his lovely family, thank you for sharing Pete with us for so many wonderful years. Your support allowed him to pour so much love and energy into our community.
As we reflect on Pete’s life and contributions, it’s clear that Chattanooga will miss him terribly. He had no peer; there is simply no one quite like him. From his genuine smile when greeting others to his relentless determination to improve our city, Pete Cooper was indeed one of a kind. We say goodbye to a dear friend, but we will always cherish the impact he made on our lives.
As we remember Pete, our city continues to move forward in various ways. Recently on October 17, 2022, the Collegedale Commission voted unanimously to approve a rezoning request for 408 acres of land at Edgmon Road and Lee Highway. This decision opens the door to the construction of 512 additional homes, which could bring new life and opportunities to our growing community.
In the broader context of our nation, it’s also a critical time for us as citizens. Access to fair and open elections is fundamental to preserving our God-given freedoms. There’s an ongoing conversation about how states can make it easier to vote while taking steps to prevent cheating. It’s a vital topic that every citizen should pay attention to, ensuring that our voices are heard in the democratic process.
As we navigate the highs and lows of our community, let’s keep Pete’s spirit alive through our actions and interactions. By continuing to strive for unity and understanding, we can honor his memory while shaping a brighter future for Chattanooga. Goodbye, my friend. Your legacy will inspire generations.
