Chickamauga's Pumpkin Festival Unites Community to Support Kelsey’s Christmas for Kids

Chickamauga’s Pumpkin Festival Brings Community Together for a Good Cause

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. – The chill in the air didn’t stop the fun at the annual Pumpkin Festival in Chickamauga this past weekend. With excitement buzzing in every corner, local residents and visitors from Chattanooga came together to enjoy a spectacular day filled with shopping and community spirit. But what made this festival especially heartwarming was its connection to a meaningful charity, Kelsey’s Christmas for Kids.

A Feast for the Senses

The festive atmosphere was undeniable as vendors lined the streets selling everything from savory snacks to sweet treats that made mouths water. Families strolled around, looking for the perfect pumpkin—whether big or small. Some festival-goers even participated in a lively costume contest, adding to the festive vibe. Laughter and smiles were everywhere as attendees soaked in the joyous occasion.

Inflatables and Kid’s Fun Zone

One of the major highlights of the festival was the vibrant Kid’s Fun Zone at the end of the block. Here, families found *gigantic inflatables* that towered over the children playing and jumping with uncontainable joy. This area was not just about fun and games; it was specially set up to help raise donations for Kelsey’s Christmas for Kids. This unique initiative helps provide gifts for children who might otherwise go without during the holiday season.

An Inspiring Legacy

The story behind Kelsey’s Christmas for Kids is both touching and inspiring. Kelsey Ownby Smith started this project as a senior assignment back in 2016 and swiftly turned it into a passion project, wanting nothing more than to make a difference in the lives of children in need. The idea took root when she took her own savings and spent it on gifts for kids at a homeless shelter instead of using it for herself during the holidays. Tragically, Kelsey passed away in 2021 at just 21 years old, leaving a profound impact on her community.

Despite their heartache, Kelsey’s family has continued her mission, expanding the organization’s reach beyond Chickamauga in hopes of touching more lives in Chattanooga. Fundraiser coordinator, Stewart Kelley, shared, “Kelsey wanted to do something for those kids, it really came from her heart.”

Grateful Hearts

While at the festival, we had the chance to speak with Lindsey Cordell, a mother who was directly supported by Kelsey’s initiative. “I was very grateful that they thought of my children that year,” she shared. “It’s embarrassing as a mom when you can’t provide for your kids. Seeing other kids with gifts made me feel inadequate, but Kelsey’s organization stepped in with kindness.” Her heartfelt words reflect the reason why this organization is so cherished in the community.

Join the Cause

The best part? The Pumpkin Festival was free for everyone, allowing families to enjoy the festivities without any financial burden. All funds raised at the Kid’s Fun Zone are being directed toward helping children in need during the holiday season. Kelsey’s Christmas for Kids is also hosting an online auction fundraiser, featuring over 400 items—making it their largest fundraiser yet. It’s a great way for those in the community to come together and support a cause that transforms lives.

If you missed the festival, there’s still a way to get involved and help out. Your participation can make a world of difference, and together we can keep Kelsey’s beautiful legacy alive. After all, it’s about more than just pumpkins; it’s about building a stronger, more caring community.
