Chattanooga, TN – As we inch closer to election day, the race for Tennessee’s 3rd Congressional District is heating up. With varying opinions on key issues like nuclear waste, quantum computing, and space for the Chattanooga National Cemetery, it seems both candidates have their work cut out for them. Incumbent U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann is seeking re-election for his seventh term, while his Democratic opponent, retired banker Jack Allen, is ready to make his mark.
Chuck Fleischmann has been a familiar face in the House of Representatives and has built a reputation for tackling important issues, even if they might not be on everyone’s radar. Although the majority of voters may not have given much thought to what happens to spent nuclear fuels or the nuances of quantum computing, Fleischmann is fully on top of these topics as well as matters affecting local veterans, like the ever-filling Chattanooga National Cemetery.
While he generally focuses his efforts on the House Appropriations Committee, Fleischmann is also interested in foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. He’s clear in his stance, stating, “I’ve consistently voted to fund it. I don’t think we can let [Russia President Vladimir] Putin win.” This perspective is a bit different from former President Donald Trump, whom he supports for a second term, demonstrating that while he aligns with some views, he isn’t afraid to diverge on others.
One of the significant achievements during his term was securing a whopping $236 million earmark for completing the new lock at the Chickamauga Dam. This funding is crucial for industrial river traffic and highlights his commitment to local infrastructure. However, it also earned him the title of “Porker of the Month” from Citizens Against Government Waste, reflecting the layered nature of his political actions.
On the other side of the aisle, we have Jack Allen, who brings his own perspectives into the race. A retired banker, Allen has a personal connection to women’s health issues, having lost his wife to ovarian cancer. This experience shapes his approach, as he champions health topics and vows to support a congressional bill that would allow for a national right to abortion.
Allen’s stance on national debt reduction and balancing the budget may resonate with some voters, especially those concerned about the current state of the national debt, which clocks in at over $35 trillion. He emphasizes the belief that “government doesn’t have all the answers,” a statement that could appeal to a conservative base seeking new ideas.
With two distinct candidates, the race in Tennessee’s 3rd Congressional District promises to be a battle of ideologies and approaches towards governance. While Fleischmann has laid out his achievements over several terms, Allen brings a fresh perspective that could attract voters looking for change.
As voters prepare for what could be a critical decision, discussions surrounding issues like the ongoing war in Ukraine, nuclear energy management, and local health care become increasingly significant. Whether they lean towards the proven track record of Fleischmann or the invigorating message from Allen, one thing is certain: voters in Chattanooga and the surrounding areas are ready to make their voices heard.
As we await the outcome, it is a great time for constituents to get involved, learn about the candidates, and make sure their voices are counted.
