She leaves behind a legacy of love and service, remembered by her family and friends. The funeral service will be held on March 29, 2025, as the community gathers to honor her remarkable life and commitment to others.
East Lake, Tennessee, is reflecting on the life of a remarkable woman, Carol Sue McCuiston Hughes, who has sadly passed away at the age of 82 on March 25, 2025. A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, Carol was a cherished member of the community whose warmth and kindness touched everyone around her.
Born in the vibrant city of Chattanooga, Carol was the daughter of the late Louis Andrew and Mary Matthews McCuiston. Throughout her life, she exemplified the values of family and community, serving as a guiding light for those lucky enough to know her. Her legacy is firmly rooted in the town she called home, and her memory will certainly linger on as a source of inspiration.
Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marion “Dude” Hughes, along with her sisters, Dorothy Overturf and Betty Selbe, and her brother, Harold Martin. Despite these losses, Carol remained resilient and dedicated to her family. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Hughes (Jon) Roberts of Chickamauga, bringing together a family that continues to honor her memory.
In addition to her daughter, Carol leaves behind a loving family that includes three grandchildren: Jillian Roberts, Sophie (Michael) King, and Maguire Roberts. The arrival of her great-grandson, Dutton Weiss King, added another layer of joy to her life, signifying the love and bonds that spanned generations. Carol also treasured her relationships with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom cherished her deeply.
Professionally, Carol made her mark as a dedicated operations manager at First Tennessee Bank. Before this, she had valuable experiences working at Dixie Yarn and Erlanger Baroness Hospital, contributing significantly to her community through her various roles. Retirement did not slow her down; she continued finding joy in spending treasured moments with her family and friends.
A long-time lover of the sport, Carol was well-known in local bowling circles. Her passion for the game not only brought her happiness but also fostered connections with many members of the community. She enjoyed sharing laughs and friendly competition on the lanes, making her a beloved figure among her peers.
The community can pay their respects to Carol on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. until noon at the local funeral home. The funeral service, set to take place at noon, will be officiated by Dr. James Selbe and Dr. Tim Owens. Following the service, her final resting place will be at Lomenique Cemetery and Mausoleum in East Ridge, Tennessee, where friends and family can gather to honor her legacy.
In lieu of flowers, Carol’s family kindly requests memorial donations to be made to the Chattanooga Educational Humane Society.
