Rossville, Georgia Remembers a Local Legend: Larry Joseph Kennedy

With heavy hearts, the tight-knit community of Rossville, Georgia bids farewell to a beloved local sports icon, Larry Joseph Kennedy, who passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the age of 76. Larry’s rich legacy stretches far beyond the baseball diamond, capturing the hearts of many who knew him and those who simply admired his remarkable achievements.

From Humble Beginnings

Born and raised in Blackbottom, Tennessee, Larry’s passion for sports ignited at a young age. After graduating from Kirkman Technical High School in 1966, he set out on a sporting journey that would take him across 12 states and over 70 cities, as he played the game he loved: ASA (America Softball Association) Softball.

A Softball Superstar

Throughout his illustrious career, Larry earned remarkable recognition for his talent on the field. Twice he was named an ASA All-American, first in Waterloo, Iowa, and later in Austin, Texas. His prowess didn’t stop there; he racked up an incredible number of awards, including over 50 MVP or All-Tournament honors. His participation in 12 ASA Chattanooga City series and 10 ASA Tennessee State Champion Teams solidified his position as a standout player in the world of softball.

Beyond Playing: A Dedicated Umpire

Softball was not just a passion for Larry; it was a lifelong commitment. He shifted gears after his playing days and served as an umpire for more than 25 years with the ASA North Georgia Umpire Association. His dedication to the sport continued as he took on the role of tournament coordinator under several directors for a total of 11 years, ensuring that local players had the opportunity to shine just as he once did.

A Loving Family Man

While Larry’s contributions to the sports community will be remembered fondly, those who loved him most will miss his gentle spirit and kind heart. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years, Shirley Kennedy, and a cherished father to his daughters, Stephanie Shipley and Michelle Hardin. The couple navigated through life’s ups and downs together, raising a family that brought him immense joy.

Sadly, Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherri Betty, and several family members, including his parents and siblings. However, his legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Chrissy Walker, Charles “Buddy” Hardin, Ben Hardin, and Joey Shipley, as well as his great-grandchildren, Isabel Seward and Dean Walker.
