Severe Weather Triggers Closures Across Hamilton County and Surrounding Areas

Hello, residents of Chattanooga and surrounding areas! You might want to grab a cozy blanket and perhaps some popcorn because, due to the potential severe weather caused by Hurricane Helene, many services and activities are being canceled or temporarily closed on Friday. It’s always best to stay informed and safe!

Schools Taking Precautions

First up, let’s talk about our local schools. If you have little ones in the Hamilton County Schools district, you need to know that schools will be closed this Friday. Furthermore, if your child typically uses the SACC (School Age Child Care) program, don’t fret! They will be opening at 10 a.m. at selected locations including Battle Academy, East Brainerd Elementary, East Ridge Elementary, Harrison Elementary, Middle Valley Elementary, and Red Bank Elementary. It’s a good idea to check in with them for the latest updates.

If you’re wondering about athletic events scheduled for Friday evening, Hamilton County Schools plans to announce any changes by 1 p.m. Friday. If you’re a twelve-month school employee, please note that there’s a two-hour delay for reporting to work, so check with your supervisor if you can’t make it on time.

Cleveland City Schools Also Closed

In a similar vein, Cleveland City Schools are following suit and will also be closed on Friday, with all extracurricular activities, including sports practices, being canceled. Keep an eye out for updates, especially regarding any evening events.

City and Health Department Services Closed

Moving on to city services, non-essential government functions and offices in Chattanooga will be closed on Friday too! Regular hours will resume on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Also, all locations of the Hamilton County Health Department will be closed for the day. They plan to return to normal hours on Monday, so mark your calendars!

UTC Adjusts Its Schedule

For those of you connected with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), be aware that all classes and activities for Friday are canceled due to the unscheduled administrative closing. What’s more, the UTC campus has decided to close its recreation facilities, so no swimming or gym workouts allowed on Friday. If you were looking forward to enjoying campus amenities, they will close early on Thursday at 8 p.m. as well.

However, if you’re feeling hungry, Mocs Dining is still buzzing with activity! They’ll be operating on a modified schedule: Crossroads Dining Hall will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., while Chef Express and Subway will cater to diners from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Make sure to check which location suits your appetite!

Public Safety First!

In case of emergencies arising from the weather, it’s always wise to know who to call. On-campus residents should reach out to UTC Police at (423) 425-HELP/4357, while those off-campus must dial 911 for urgent matters. And remember, for any mental health crises, the UTC CARE line (423) 425-CARE/2273 is available for support.

Transport and Attractions Close, Too

If you think about visiting the beautiful Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, you might want to change your plans as it will be closed on Friday due to the anticipated storm. It’s expected to reopen on Saturday, but of course, that depends on safety inspections and weather conditions. Safety is always the priority!

Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open

As we all keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best, make sure to stay tuned for updates from local authorities regarding any changes. This storm may change plans for many, but let’s make safety our priority. Stay warm, stay dry, and look after one another!
