Soddy Daisy Approves Scenic Corridor and Plans for Community Improvements

Soddy Daisy’s New Scenic Corridor and Community Updates

In an exciting turn of events during a recent meeting, the Soddy Daisy Commission has made great strides in enhancing the city’s charm and functionality. After a public hearing with absolutely no opposition, the commission granted final approval to establish a new zoning area that will run alongside the picturesque Soddy Lake. This scenic corridor aims to make the area more inviting and accessible for residents and visitors alike.

New Zoning for a Scenic View

At the Thursday night meeting, the commission also passed an ordinance that clearly defines smoke and vape shops, CBD retailers, and alternative financial businesses. By identifying these types of establishments, the city can now exclude them from the scenic corridor around Soddy Lake, keeping the focus on nature’s beauty and making the area safe and welcoming for walkers who will soon enjoy new sidewalks.

Keeping Up with Building Codes

Additionally, the commission voted to update the city’s building, mechanical, plumbing, energy, and gas codes in order to keep in line with state regulations, which require updating every nine years. Currently, the building codes in Hamilton County are from 2018, but this proactive measure will ensure that Soddy Daisy is in line with the most current standards.

Road Assessments for Future Improvement

In a bid to improve infrastructure, the city is contracting with Public Works to assess all asphalt roads and street signs. The findings from these assessments will guide the prioritization of necessary repairs, all set within a budget of $36,000. This step is essential in ensuring that city roads are safe and well-maintained for everyone.

Traffic Changes Ahead

On the topic of roads, residents should be aware that traffic on Highway 27 will be impacted on September 24 due to the bike segment of the Ironman Triathlon. Fire Chief Dusty Morgan warns that some lanes will be blocked and advises everyone to stay updated by checking the city’s website for further details.

Fall Festival Fun for Everyone

Speaking of fun, mark your calendars for the Soddy Daisy Fall Festival on September 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Soddy Lake Park, located at 197 Durham St. Cindi Sandin, a devoted volunteer from Keep Soddy Daisy Beautiful, has organized a fantastic lineup of activities. With 193 vendors, including nonprofits and kids’ booths, there’s sure to be something for everyone!

The festival will feature free activities such as a bounce house, face painting, balloon twisting, a magic show, carriage rides, live music, free family photos, and even a petting zoo. Additionally, the Keeping Kids Warm Coat Drive will be collecting new coats for children at the Kids Park. Donations can also be made at the local library from September 24-27.

Engaging with Local Candidates

In the spirit of community engagement, Diane Walker is organizing a second Town Hall meeting for citizens to listen to candidates running for commissioner. Due to positive feedback from the first meeting, this second chance to engage will take place on October 24 at 7 p.m. at Freedom Church.

Structured Meetings for Better Communication

To maintain clarity and accuracy during commission meetings, Attorney Sam Elliott emphasized the need for structured proceedings. This will require citizens speaking at the meetings to address the commission from a podium, provide their name and address, and limit their speaking time to three minutes. This change is aimed at ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard while keeping the meetings organized.

Stay Informed and Active!

As you can see, there’s a lot happening in Soddy Daisy. With new initiatives, events, and infrastructure improvements underway, now is a fantastic time to get involved and enjoy everything the community has to offer. Don’t forget to join in the fun at the Fall Festival and keep an eye out for updates regarding the Ironman Triathlon’s road closures!
