Songbirds Debuts “Impressions” Exhibition at Downtown Library
HERE News, Chattanooga: The renowned Songbirds Foundation and the Chattanooga Public Library have collaborated to present an enthralling new exhibit called “Impressions”. The debut is set for this Thursday at the Library’s Main/Downtown location. The exhibit, an exquisite collection of music memorabilia, will be displayed until June 28, 2025, when Songbirds is set to debut another unique exhibition featuring new items from the museum’s collections.
Popular music group The Impressions, originally created by Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler, welcomes Chattanooga natives Fred Cash and Sam Gooden. Other eminent musicians who have associated with the group over the years include Arthur and Richard Brooks, Leroy Hutson, Ralph Johnson, Reggie Torian, and Chattanooga musician Willie Kitchens.
Impressions: An Integral Part of America’s Civil rights Movement
Reed Caldwell, the Executive Director of Songbirds, shared his thoughts on The Impressions, “An integral part of America’s Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s—their music inspired people to keep fighting for equality. Fred Cash, Sam Gooden, and Curtis Mayfield were pioneers, and they took a risk singing those songs. I believe that we can never do enough to honor this group and celebrate their message of hope and unity. I hope this exhibit can help people understand the importance of this band and their music.”
Opening Reception: A Resounding Tribute to The Impressions
Songbirds and the Library are hosting an opening reception for the exhibition on Thursday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The event will feature a captivating performance by local musicians Dran Michael Lewis, Jared White, Aaron Dick, and Zowie Boyd. Complimentary wine will be served courtesy of the Chattanooga Public Library Foundation. This event is free of charge and open to all members of the public.
