A horrifying incident unfolded in one of Chattanooga’s bustling mobile stores when a 17-year-old was shot at by a suspect now identified as a 20-year-old male. The incident took place at a T-Mobile store on Brainerd Road at the Eastgate Mall complex around 1 PM.
Initial reports indicate that the accused, Corterius Bowling, was already inside the store when the 17-year-old victim stepped in. Witnesses describe a “brief interaction” between the two before the victim exited the store briefly and returned. It was then that the dreadful sequence of events kicked off, with Bowling firing shots at the teenager. The victim tried to escape by running out of the store, but Bowling pursued him into the parking lot, continuing to fire shots in his direction.
Fortunately, the teenager’s injuries were non-life-threatening, with the bullets merely grazing his arm. Emergency services were swift in their response, and the teenager was immediately rushed to a local hospital.
A stroke of luck was on hand as a detective from the Red Bank Police Department happened to be in the vicinity when the incident occurred. The detective noticed a man fitting the description of the suspect getting into a vehicle and swiftly alerted Chattanooga Police officers, who initiated a traffic stop and arrested Bowling.
Upon being apprehended, Bowling claimed he had fired the shots in fear of being shot at by the victim. However, surveillance footage reviewed by investigators did not substantiate his claim. Subsequently, Bowling was charged with attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy commended the quick thinking and action of the officers and detectives involved who worked seamlessly to capture the suspect within a short time frame.
