In a bid to enhance water sustainability, Tennessee American Water is highlighting essential tips to help customers reduce water usage during these hot, dry summer months. The company emphasizes the effectiveness of simple eco-friendly practices, such as optimizing usage when watering, maintaining yards and households.
Grady Stout, vice president of operations at Tennessee American Water, voiced the necessity of collective responsibility, saying, “At Tennessee American Water, we believe that all of us play a role in protecting our water resources.” He added, “While the weather conditions increase the demand for water, there are still ways we can conserve our water use for irrigation and other outdoor activities.”
Tennessee American Water’s customers can readily monitor their water usage via their MyWater account. Additionally, the company’s website (Tennesseeamwater.com) provides informative resources such as a Leak Detection Kit for efficient leak identification and repair.
Key tips to conserving water outdoors include:
1. Reusing water from rain barrels and kiddie pools for irrigation purposes.
2. Embracing the use of a bucket instead of using a running hose for washing cars and pets, or even rinsing off sandy or grassy feet.
3. Sweeping instead of spraying when clearing debris from sidewalks or pavements, minimizing water use.
4. Timing water usage to coincide with the coolest parts of the day (early morning or evening) to minimize evaporation.
5. Watering plants only when necessary and being aware of those that do not require daily watering. Most lawns typically require only one inch of water per week.
6. Watching the weather forecast to avoid doubling water consumption by watering before a rainfall.
7. Selecting native plant varieties that require less watering and remain hearty in drier weather conditions.
8. Becoming a leak detective to identify and fix leaks and breaks in hoses, sprinkler systems, and pipes.
9. Raising the lawnmower blade to avoid lawn burnout and the consequent need for excess watering.
10. Checking your sprinkler’s sweep to ensure the water is reaching plants as intended and not being wasted on pavement.
Including children in these water conservation practices can instill in them valuable lessons concerning the importance of water sustainability. Tennessee American Water encourages customers to make use of their Water Learning Center to teach children about the essential role water plays in our lives.
The company hopes that by collectively adopting these water-saving tips, they can significantly reduce water consumption, thereby contributing to the preservation of this valuable resource – a cause that gains increasing urgency with each passing summer.
