School Delays and Closures for Local Schools on Thursday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In light of severe weather conditions, a multitude of local area schools have announced delays or closures for Thursday, May 9, 2024.

2-hour Delays

Several schools delayed their opening by two hours. These include Bradley and Bledsoe Co. Schools, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, Chattanooga Preparatory School, and Chickamauga City Schools. Additionally, several others like the Hamilton and Jackson Co. Schools, Montessori Highland Park Schools, Sequatchie, and Walker Co. Schools also announced a delay.

Other Delayed Schools

Students of Berean Academy, Catoosa, Cumberland, Dade, Dayton City, and DeKalb Co. Schools will also begin their day two hours late on Thursday. Grundy, Meigs, and Polk Co. Schools, as well as Oakwood Christian Academy and Skyuka Hall, also join the list of schools observing a two-hour delay.

3-hour Delays

In contrast, the Marion Co. Schools announced a longer delay of three hours.

School Closures

For some institutions, the severe weather has caused a complete closure. These schools include Bradley Co. Schools, Cleveland City Schools, Rhea Co. Schools, and Whitfield Co. Schools.

Parents, students, and teachers are urged to stay updated on the latest announcements through official school websites and social media channels. Additional information may also be obtained from local weather reports.

Implications for Parents and Students

These school closures and delays are not only impacting school schedules but also parents’ work schedules and after-school activities. Parents are organizing carpool groups for their children due to changed bus schedules, and after-school activities have been adjusted or cancelled. Students are also urged to use this time constructively for independent studying.

Weather Update

Sources indicate that the severe weather conditions causing these delays and closures are expected to persist into early Thursday morning. However, weather conditions are expected to improve in the later part of the day. Parents and students are advised to exercise caution while commuting to and from school.
