Hakeem pointed out how Brown emerged victorious in the lawsuit, Brown v. Board of Commissioners of the City of Chattanooga in 1989, which liquidated the Chattanooga Board of Commissioners for systematically alienating African Americans and led to the establishment of the Chattanooga City Council.
Hakeem then emphasised Rep. Brown’s valuable contributions after being elected as the first black woman to represent District 28 in the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1992. She served until 2012, continuously fought for racial justice, advocated for increased educational opportunities, and championed common-sense gun laws.
Even after retiring, Brown continued to serve the 28th district working with the Community Development Corporation, which she founded. “I am so appreciative of my friend Tommie Brown’s support.
