Former Rep. Tommie Brown Endorses Yusuf Hakeem For House District 28

In a recent development that marked a crucial moment in Tennessee politics, former Tennessee State Rep. Tommie Brown (D-Chattanooga) has voiced his support for Rep. Yusuf Hakeem’s re-election campaign for House District 28.

Tommie Brown, A Leader Advocating for Equality

Dr. Brown is recognized as a regional civil rights leader who has served as the longest-serving representative of House District 28. On Friday, she publicly endorsed Rep. Yusuf Hakeem, highlighting his unwavering dedication to the Chattanooga community and his commendable achievements in Nashville.

In her endorsement, she proudly stated, “Yusuf Hakeem is the most powerful ally Chattanooga has in the fight for common sense gun legislation, women’s reproductive healthcare, and quality education options for every child in Tennessee no matter where they come from. “Integrity and respect matter, especially in today’s political world. Yusuf Hakeem is the right person to move Tennessee forward – I have no doubt. I hope you will join me in voting for him on Aug. 1.”

Yusuf Hakeem Continues Brown’s Legacy

Responding to her endorsement, Rep. Hakeem acknowledged the role that Brown played in overturning the racial disparities in regional politics. Hakeem pointed out how Brown emerged victorious in the lawsuit, Brown v. Board of Commissioners of the City of Chattanooga in 1989, which liquidated the Chattanooga Board of Commissioners for systematically alienating African Americans and led to the establishment of the Chattanooga City Council.

Hakeem then emphasised Rep. Brown’s valuable contributions after being elected as the first black woman to represent District 28 in the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1992. She served until 2012, continuously fought for racial justice, advocated for increased educational opportunities, and championed common-sense gun laws.

Even after retiring, Brown continued to serve the 28th district working with the Community Development Corporation, which she founded. “I am so appreciative of my friend Tommie Brown’s support. For three decades, she was a strong voice for Chattanooga, and I have tried every day to continue her legacy”, said Hakeem emotionally.

Conclusion

Former Rep. Tommie Brown’s endorsement of Yusuf Hakeem signifies a significant milestone in Hakeem’s campaign for re-election. A beacon of integrity and respect, Hakeem, with Brown’s support, is hopeful about moving Tennessee forward and continuing his predecessor’s legacy. This move is undoubtedly expected to resonate with Chattanooga’s voters, exhibiting that unity and commitment are key factors in building a prosperous community.
