Sponsor Our ArticlesThe University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) men’s basketball team is preparing for their Southern Conference season after finishing the non-conference period with an 8-5 record. They look to continue their momentum after a strong performance, highlighted by key players like Trey Bonham and Honor Huff. As they head into the conference play starting January 1, 2025, fans are eager to see how the team will capitalize on their experience and resilience amid challenges faced throughout the season.
Hey, friends! Are you ready for some basketball action? The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) men’s basketball team has been busy on the court, wrapping up their non-conference season with a solid 8-5 record. That must feel good, right? It’s always nice to see our local teams making waves and putting up some impressive numbers!
During their non-conference games, the Mocs had some thrilling moments. One of the standout victories came against Bryant, which definitely gave fans something to cheer about! With the start of the Southern Conference season just around the corner, it looks like the team is ready to keep that momentum going.
Circle your calendars—January 1, 2025, marks the beginning of the Southern Conference play for the Mocs, kicking off against Mercer. Mercer wrapped up their non-conference play with a 7-6 record, and it will be interesting to see how our Mocs match up, especially under their new head coach, Ryan Ridder.
An exciting feature of UTC’s roster this season is the incredible backcourt duo, senior Trey Bonham and junior Honor Huff. These two are making quite a name for themselves, boasting one of the top backcourts in the Southern Conference. Trey has been averaging an impressive 16.0 points per game and is hitting 39% of his three-point attempts. Meanwhile, Honor has really found his rhythm, averaging 19 points and shooting an impressive 52% from beyond the arc.
The road hasn’t been entirely smooth for the Mocs. After starting the season with an 0-3 record, the team has significantly bounced back, winning eight of their last ten games. It’s a testament to their resilience and teamwork. With various injuries testing the team’s depth, 11 players have been logging at least 10 minutes of playtime per game, showcasing their strong bench strength.
As the team embarks on this new chapter, it’s likely they will lean heavily on key players like Bonham, Huff, and Jack Kostel. Plus, they have some formidable wings and big men joining the mix. Players like Bash Wieland and Garrison Keeslar, along with towering bigs like Frank Champion, Sean Cusano, Makai Richards, and Collin Mulholland—who are all at least 6-foot-9—add a significant advantage on both offense and defense.
It’s also great to note the return of sophomore Noah Melson and freshman Latif Diouf, who are now available after battling injuries. Experience is certainly a key player in the games, as many athletes on the roster are aged 22 and older. This maturity contributes positively to decision-making, especially during those nail-biting close games. Champion is back and has proved how versatile he can be, not just in scoring but in ball-handling too. And we can’t forget about Mulholland, who is making his mark as a potential threat both inside and from the perimeter.
Nonetheless, there have been challenges along the way. Physicality has been a hurdle, particularly evident in their losses against teams like USC, Austin Peay, and Lipscomb. As they head into conference play, UTC will need to enhance their physical play to ensure they’re competitive against the league’s toughest teams.
So, as the Southern Conference play begins, let’s rally around our UTC Mocs! With their hard work and determination, we can only expect exciting games ahead. Keep your spirits high and let’s hope for some spectacular victories in the coming weeks!
