The nurse education world is in mourning with the passing of Veronica Soriano Cabrera, a prominent Nursing Professor who had a distinguished career spanning several decades. Veronica, 84, who lived in Ooltewah, Tennessee, albeit formerly of Cocoa, Florida, and Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
Born into the Soriano family on April 29, 1939, in Narvacan Ilocos Sur, Philippines, Veronica was the daughter of the late Dionisio Soriano and Martina Cabero. The practice of service to others was embedded in her from a young age.
Mrs. Cabrera’s academic influence was far-reaching. She held prestigious positions during her career, including roles as a Nursing Professor at Indiana University and also an Associate Professor of Nursing at Marian College in Indianapolis, IN. Her productive career and contribution to the nursing field were exemplary, and she has mentored many future nurses through her teachings.
A woman of faith, Veronica was an active member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and choir in Cocoa, Florida, where her belief and values were reflected in her life and work.
Her husband, Dominador Cabrera, preceded her in death. Mrs. Cabrera’s loss is deeply felt by her surviving kin: her children – Irene (Marco) Salenda of Chattanooga; Rene (Kelly) Cabrera of Springfield, Il.; Edgardo (Julia) Cabrera of Batavia, Il.; sister – Erlinda Soriano West of Markham Ontario Canada; her grandchildren – Carlo Salenda, Caleb Salenda, Scott Cabrera, and Elena Cabrera; and nephews – Ronald (Giang) West and Alan (Ramona) West. Her great-nieces Madison, Ashleigh, Tiffany, Ayanna West, and great-nephew Aidan West also mourn the loss.
The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, March 5, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. (EST) at St. Stephen Catholic Church (7111 Lee Hwy., Chattanooga, TN, 37421). The funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m., lead by Father Manuel Perez.
