Chattanooga’s Walnut Street Bridge to Skip Twinkling Lights This Year
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The holiday lights that typically adorn the iconic Walnut Street Bridge are going to be missed this year, and the reason isn’t what many folks in the community would have expected. The trusted Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors has announced that they won’t be decorating the bridge due to unforeseen electrical issues.
Now, if you’re like many locals, you’ve probably already noticed the absence of those beautiful twinkling lights that usually draw families and visitors to the bridge during the holiday season. It’s always a delight to see the bridge sparkling at night, and many people in Chattanooga have shared their disappointment over the missing festive decorations. Brian Smith, the Communications Director for Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors, expressed the shared sentiment from the community. “I know the iconic snowflakes—people look forward to them each and every year—and we’re just as sad that we’re not able to showcase them this year,” he noted.
Smith explained that while they were installing the decorations, they ran into some electrical hiccups. “As we started assessing the situation, we realized it wouldn’t be cost-effective to repair right now, especially knowing that in March, the Walnut Street Bridge is scheduled for a complete restoration. Trust me, they’re going to come back better than ever!” he said with an air of optimism.
Big Changes Ahead for the Iconic Bridge
With a full remodel of the bridge set to begin, including significant upgrades to its electrical system, this year’s light display simply wasn’t in the cards. Starting in March, the bridge will close for an 18-month renovation project. Now, we know that sounds like a long time, but it’s necessary to ensure the bridge remains a significant gem of our city for years to come.
“This includes sandblasting and repainting the entire bridge, replacing all the wood, and upgrading the electrical system,” said Smith, laying out the ambitious plans in detail. “This is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the country, so it’s a big task, but an important one.”
Residents Show Mixed Emotions
Residents are feeling a mix of excitement about the upcoming improvements and nostalgia over the missing holiday lights. Local residents Hadley Brewer and her father, Oby, recently took a stroll on the bridge, hoping against hope to see those enchanting lights. Sadly, they left feeling a bit let down. “I would love for the lights to come back on. I loved them so much,” shared Hadley. “You can always walk in the park and see them.”
Her father, Oby, added, “I think this bridge is very important to Chattanooga. A lot of families like to come here to walk with their kids and dogs, and they enjoy the lights. The lights are a big part of it. I think the renovation is going to be great, but I hope they bring back the lights too.”
Looking Forward to a Brighter Future
As bittersweet as it is to say goodbye to the lights this year, Smith reassured residents that all the current issues, like missing lights or broken snowflakes, will ultimately be resolved. “The Walnut Street Bridge is a big part of Chattanooga’s history, and while this renovation might take a while, it guarantees the bridge will be here for many, many years to come,” he affirmed.
