World War II veteran, Steve Robert O’Rear, 97, of Chattanooga passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024, at his home. This deeply respected member of the community had led a life marked by service, dedication, and contribution.
Mr. O’Rear was a member of Graceworks Church, showcasing his strong Christian faith throughout his life. He was also an involved member of Gideons International since 1968, greatly aiding in the establishment of several local Gideon camps.
Steve Robert O’Rear built his career around hard work and dedication to service. He joyfully served the people of Chattanooga as a fireman with the Chattanooga Fire Department, demonstrating his bravery and commitment to helping others. He was also involved in local business, at one time owning the Charles Chips franchise in Chattanooga.
Later, he took on the role of Recycling Manager at Southern Champion Tray. His tenure at the company marked a significant period of his professional life. He retired from Southern Champion Tray, marking the end of an era of his hard work, dedication, and commitment to sustaining the environment.
The legacy of his service extends back to his time in the U.S. Army. He served as a sergeant in occupied Japan during World War II, an experience that shaped his life significantly. He was also an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, highlighting his continued dedication to fellow veterans and the larger community.
Beyond his career and his service, Steve Robert O’Rear was a family man. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Crowder O’Rear. He is survived by his two sons, Richard O’Rear (Kathy Greene) and Thomas O’Rear. He is also survived by his three grandchildren; Dr. Rachel O’Rear, Kevin O’Rear, and Eric (Winfrey) O’Rear.
To pay their respects, a graveside service will be held for Mr. O’Rear at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 7, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, where Dr. Bill Owens will officiate. Friends and family will be gathering from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road, to remember and honor the life of this remarkable man.
