After 453 days away from the mat, Ohio State University wrestler Sammy Sasso made a triumphant return to competition on November 14, 2024, against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. This emotional comeback follows a life-threatening incident where Sasso was shot in the abdomen during a carjacking in Weinland Park.
Since the moment he woke up in the hospital, Sammy has been focused on returning to wrestling. “You just go from training at such a high level to being in physical therapy, learning how to stand and walk again. It’s definitely humbling,” he reflected. Sasso’s passion for wrestling, which he described as something his body does naturally, kept him motivated throughout his recovery.
Before being sidelined by the shooting, Sasso had established himself as a top competitor. He is a four-time All-American and a two-time Big Ten Champion, and he has competed for the NCAA title in the 149-pound weight class. This experience has brought a new perspective; he now appreciates every moment spent on the mat.
Ohio State’s head coach, Tom Ryan, who is also recovering from a serious injury sustained in a car accident, shared insights on Sasso’s journey. Ryan emphasized the incredible toughness Sammy has shown throughout his recovery. He noted that while Sasso’s skills remain intact, his wrestling style may need to adapt due to the lingering effects of the injury. “He just doesn’t have the speed he had,” Ryan mentioned, indicating that Sasso would likely be more strategic in his approach to matches.
This season, Sasso is also moving up in weight, competing in the 165-pound class, a shift from his previous bouts at 149 pounds. This transition adds another layer of challenge to his comeback. “There is a lot of learning that has occurred for him in the new Sammy,” Ryan stated.
Beyond the physical adjustments, the mental aspect of returning to competition has been daunting for Sasso. The loss of his previous athletic abilities at such a crucial time in his life was a tough pill to swallow. “Since it happened, you get something you love taken away so fast. I’ve been doing this for 32 years,” he expressed, ready to embrace the nerves that come with competition.
As Sasso prepared for his first match in front of fans once again, he allowed himself to feel the excitement. “I’ll feel the nerves and I’ll enjoy them because I’ve missed that,” he said, radiating enthusiasm for his return. “I’ve been thinking about running out of the tunnel for a long time, so yeah. Let’s Go Bucks, baby.”
In an incredible return to the mat, Sammy Sasso won his match against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a score of 12-6, marking a significant milestone in his recovery process and reaffirming his dedication to the sport.
As Sasso continues his journey in wrestling, the Columbus community stands behind him, celebrating not just his return, but the resilience he has shown throughout this unimaginable experience. His story serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of sports in our lives.
