Chattanooga is gearing up for an exciting election season as one of its long-time representatives, State Rep. Yusuf Hakeem, puts his hat in the ring for reelection to the Tennessee House of Representatives for District 28. At the age of 75, Hakeem has deep roots in the community, having been born and raised right here in Chattanooga. He and his wife, Baseemah, have recently celebrated a remarkable milestone of 50 years together. The couple is proud parents to four children and grandparents to four grandchildren, as well as four great-grandchildren, making family a rich tapestry in their lives.
Hakeem’s educational background includes attending The Howard School, where he laid his foundational knowledge, followed by the study of electronics at Chattanooga State Community College and economics at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His career kicked off as a service technician at General Electric, where he dedicated 25 years before stepping into public service.
The path of public service has ran through Hakeem’s life for decades. He served three terms on the Hamilton County Board of Education from 1981 to 1990 and then moved on to the Chattanooga City Council from 1990 to 2006. His commitment didn’t stop there; he was also part of the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole from 2006 to 2013 and made a triumphant return to the city council from 2013 to 2017. In 2019, he was elected to his current position in the House of Representatives, where he has been serving for six years. He faces a challenge from independent candidate Dr. Thomas J. Brooks III in the upcoming general election scheduled for November 5. As early voting kicks off in Tennessee this Wednesday, voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on the crucial issues shaping their community.
According to Hakeem, two of the primary issues impacting District 28 are employment and abortion. Recently, he participated in a Q&A session where he shared some insights into his views on these and other pivotal topics. When it comes to abortion rights, he has been vocal about his concerns regarding the current legislation in Tennessee, which he believes limits the freedoms of women. “The state’s position right now,” he expressed, “is not in the best interest of the community.” Hakeem intends to propose initiatives that address cases of rape and incest, underscoring the importance of considering both women’s rights and community health in policy discussions.
Gun legislation is another hot topic on Hakeem’s agenda. He remarked that Tennessee’s current laws around gun access have strayed from common sense, particularly the ability for 18-year-olds to attain weapons of war without sufficient restrictions. “I’m a gun owner myself,” he noted, “and I believe people have the right to own guns, but we need to ensure that there are regulations, especially concerning safety and mental health.” His comments highlight a desire for more thoughtful legislation around this pressing issue.
Education is another battleground where Hakeem has strong opinions. He opposes the voucher system pushed by Governor Bill Lee, stating that it effectively privatizes education and prioritizes profit over the quality of education for all children. According to him, “Vouchers limit our ability to educate children effectively and funnel money to those who may not serve educational interests.” Hakeem believes that education should be accessible and equitable, allowing young people from diverse backgrounds to thrive academically and socially.
As he campaigns for reelection, Hakeem’s focus remains on listening to the community and advocating for policies that match their needs. With November 5 on the horizon, Chattanooga residents are gearing up to make their voices heard, and Hakeem is determined to ensure that those voices resonate loudly in the halls of the legislature. Whether it’s through conversations at the coffee shop or town hall meetings, he is eager to engage with constituents on the issues that matter most to them.
